Sunbed Working Group recommends ban on commercial sunbeds

On the 26th of April 2026 the Minister for Public Health, Wellbeing and the National Drugs Strategy, Jennifer Murnane O’Connor TD, published two reports on commercial sunbed use in Ireland.

The publications include the Report of the Sunbed Working Group and the Department of Health Sunbeds Workshop Report. They assess the health evidence on sunbed use, review current regulations, and consider international experience. Both reports highlight the strong link between sunbed use and skin cancer and conclude that existing controls, including age restrictions, are not sufficient to prevent harm.

The Working Group found that a ban on commercial sunbeds would be the most effective, evidence‑based way to reduce health risks, particularly for children and young people. The Workshop Report also showed broad agreement among stakeholders on the need for stronger action, combining legislation, enforcement and public awareness.

A third report based on a public consultation is being finalised and will be published shortly. All three reports will be considered together, alongside legal and economic considerations, before policy proposals are brought to Government. The Minister has confirmed that this work will now progress to the next phase of policy development.
