My name is Edel Byrne and I commenced as the Senior Health Promotion & Improvement Officer for Cancer Prevention for the HSE Dublin Midlands region in January 2026. I have worked in the discipline of Health Promotion for the last 17 years, predominately across the not-for-profit sector and in most recent years the HSE under Health and Wellbeing. My career to date has been underpinned by a Master of Arts Degree in Health Promotion from NUI Galway and an undergraduate BSc Degree in Spatial Planning from Technical University Dublin. In my early career, I worked as a Town Planner in Kildare County Council before diversifying into the discipline of Health Promotion, merging my understanding of built environment policy and physical/mental health outcomes. Prior to taking up this role, I was the Sláintecare Healthy Communities Co-ordinator across the former HSE Dublin South Kildare West Wicklow area leading the delivery of a suite of evidence-based health & wellbeing programmes across 4 socially disadvantaged areas with the aim improving health outcomes.
My work with Health Promotion & Improvement and the NCCP involves a specific focus on cancer risk reduction, skin cancer prevention and early diagnosis through awareness of signs and symptoms with underserved target populations. I am delighted to have joined the team of Senior Health Promotion & Improvement Officers for Cancer Prevention around the country and look forward to driving the regional implementation of national initiatives led by the NCCP. Like many families across Ireland, cancer has been no stranger to our door, and this drives my passion for the importance and value of cancer prevention and early diagnosis. Outside of work, my love of family life with my husband, son and daughter takes centre stage, along with my passion for running and physical activity.
