The HSE’s National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) and Healthy Ireland are planning a webinar for primary and post-primary school teachers on How to become a SunSmart School.
Skin cancer is one of the most preventable cancers by protecting skin from UV radiation. Children’s skin is very sensitive to UV from the sun which can cause long term damage. UV exposure during the first 10–15 years of life makes a disproportionately large contribution to lifetime risk of skin cancer. Children spend half of their childhood at school and about eight hours per week travelling to and from school, on lunch breaks, and participating in outdoor school-based activities. Much of this time falls between the hours of 11am and 3pm when the sun’s UV rays are at their strongest. Schools can help protect children’s skin, reducing risk of future skin cancers through education and role modelling.
The webinars aim to provide an engaging and informative professional learning session for primary and post primary school teachers that builds an understanding of the SunSmart School Accreditation Programme.
