Farming Health Screening Event, HSE South West

The Health Promotion Department was successful in receiving funding from the Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine to run 3 Health Screening events for Farmers in Cork. The first of which took place in Clonakilty, West Cork in July it was a resounding success, with 592 people attending on the day. The event offered a wide range of free health and wellbeing services including;

  • Blood pressure monitoring and cardiovascular risk awareness
  • Diabetes risk screening
  • Brief health promotion advice (e.g. smoking cessation, alcohol awareness, nutrition, mental wellbeing)
  • SunSmart for Farmers
  • Community Champions Cancer Screening
  • Physio advice & physical activity promotion
  • Signposting to relevant health and community services

The outstanding turnout highlights the growing interest in proactive health promotion opportunities within the farming community and the value of bringing accessible health services directly to rural areas. More events will follow.

This is following on from the resource that was developed with the physiotherapy team, ‘Move More Farm Better’ which has a series of video demos as well as info and advice on back, neck and shoulder exercises and highlights sun smart resources for farmers
