CancerWatch is a major new EU Joint Action designed to transform how Europe collects, harmonises, and uses cancer data. Coordinated by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and involving over 90 partner organisations from 29 countries, the initiative aims to improve the quality, comparability, and timeliness of population-based cancer registry data across Europe. This enhanced data infrastructure will feed into key systems such as the European Cancer Information System (ECIS) and support Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan by strengthening prevention, early detection, and cancer control efforts.

The National Cancer Registry of Ireland’s (NCRI) Role in CancerWatch
The National Cancer Registry Ireland (NCRI) is a key partner in CancerWatch, contributing Irish cancer data and expertise to this pan European effort. NCRI’s work within the project includes:
- Implementing new digital tools and harmonised data standards to enhance data completeness and timeliness.
- Ensuring Irish cancer data are fully comparable within the European cancer intelligence landscape.
- Supporting the development of new cancer indicators and methodologies for future European surveillance.
- Contributing to solutions that address legal and GDPR related challenges in cross-border data sharing.
By participating in CancerWatch, NCRI helps ensure that high quality Irish data inform European level cancer prevention and control strategies while strengthening Ireland’s role within Europe’s public health intelligence network.
